6 Tips to Improve Your Dog's Bar Patio Etiquette

Summer is coming and I’m getting several requests from people to help get their dogs ready to hang out on patios at bars, breweries, and restaurants.

In my world, dogs go everywhere with their people. It’s natural for the pack to stay together – unfortunately, that’s not reality for dogs in our world. Bars, breweries, and cafes are the exception to that rule – but only when the weather is nice.

So more than likely, your dog is out of practice, or being in a public establishment is a skill they’ve never developed.

Here are some tips to help your dog become the coolest guy at the bar.

When you bring home a baby from the hospital, that first night alone, without the aid of nurses and a constant flow of family and friends willing and eager to hold your new little one, can be frightening.

You’re excited and completely in love, but at the same, there’s this sinking feel: my life will never be the same again.

My List of the BEST Books on Dog Training - Plus More!

7/1/2015

Dog training doesn't just require hours of hands-on work - it also requires lots of research! There are so many competing methodologies, learning them all enables me to be a well-rounded trainer. I'm able to approach each dog with an arsenal of knowledge and apply methods as needed. With that, I have found several books that I recommend to my clients that are not too technical and provide additional help once our training sessions have ended.

If you've ever wondered what we're reading over at AWDT, check out our pinterest board of all the BEST dog reads. These books range from the very top level overview of owning a furry friend to dog fiction to deep dives into specific hurdles you may run into with your dog.

Note that some of these books contain outdated methodologies that I would not use or recommend, but I add them to the list to because they contain such useful information.

This board is constantly updated, so I encourage you to follow it if you're looking to broaden your skills as a responsible dog owner!

Animal Planet has developed a really neat"Dog Breed Questionnaire" on their website. It asks you 10 short questions and then presents a tight list of breeds that are geared towards your desired traits.

For fun, we filled it out with the typical American dog owner's desires in a dog - small, low maintenance, good with kids and other animals, couch potato, easy grooming, etc. And the list list we received was ... interesting!

Anatomy of a good dog walk
We all know walking your dog on a daily basis is crucial to your dog's training. It provides structure in their otherwise unstructured days, gives your dog a job, allows your dog to practice self control, and it gives you an opportunity to assert yourself as the leader in your relationship. However, walking your dog can quickly become chaotic and even dangerous if you don't properly train your furry friend.
